Chapter I · The Anomaly That Does Not Drift

The core fell at seventeen forty-two, in minus thirty-two degrees, in the absolute darkness of the drill shaft.

Junod heard it before he saw it — or rather, he heard its absence: the sudden silence of the extractor after the sharp crack of the cable, followed by the deep resonant sound of something heavy striking the walls of ice at irregular intervals as it descended. He knew immediately what the sound signified. He knew also — with the cold precision of a man who had spent three winters on the polar sheet learning what the ice could do to those who studied it — that he had approximately ninety seconds before the core reached the bottom of the shaft and everything was lost.

He descended into the shaft.

Not literally. The drill shaft was twenty-three centimetres in diameter, far too narrow for a man. But the access platform spiralled around the main bore, a metal structure built to let technicians reach intermediate levels in cases of equipment failure. Junod knew every rung of that spiral by heart, having descended and ascended it three hundred and forty-two times since the start of the campaign. He kept count, as he kept count of everything, because counting was the most accurate form of knowledge available in an environment that punished approximations.

He descended fifty-two rungs in forty seconds.

Bad. Too slow. Fifty seconds remaining.

Halfway down, his headlamp caught something: a reflection in the ice, two metres below him, wedged in the angle where the shaft wall met the lip of the level four platform. The core. Not at the bottom — it had struck the lip and stopped there, held by friction and chance in the unstable position of something that had not yet decided whether to continue falling.

He stopped. He calculated.

The lip was sixty centimetres from his right hand. He could reach it if — and only if — he released the rung with his left hand and stretched beyond the point at which his centre of gravity remained above the platform. In doing so, he risked falling. The bottom of the shaft was forty metres below him. There was no net. There had never been a net; nets were a line item, and line items were approved in Ushuaia by men who had never stood in a shaft.

What there was, resting on the lip sixty centimetres from his hand: a cylinder of ice one hundred and seventy centimetres long and nine centimetres in diameter, drawn from seventeen hundred metres of depth, containing — he knew this now, after three weeks of preliminary assay — something impossible. Something no glaciology textbook mentioned, because no glaciologist had ever had occasion to mention it.

At seventeen hundred metres, the ice was ninety-one thousand years old. Roughly a hundred and three solar cycles, in the reckoning the Cantons had adopted after the Red Silence, when the old calendars had proven too small to hold what had happened and too intimate to survive it. Ninety-one thousand years. And in that ice, sealed in bubbles of Pleistocene atmosphere the size of a pinhead, Junod had found a signature that should not have existed: a viroid-scale packet, crystalline, inert, structurally identical — to four decimal places of similarity — to the bot recovered from the pharyngeal tissue of a living Homo algalis child in the Canton of Tierra Nueva eleven months earlier.

Not similar. Identical.

Ninety-one thousand years apart, and the thing had not drifted. Not one base. Not even a single fold.

Nothing in biology holds still for ninety-one thousand years. Nothing. Unless it is not, in the sense biology means it, alive — unless it is a message rather than an organism, and messages do not evolve, they only wait.

He let go with his left hand.

The world narrowed to the width of his own attention. He felt his mass swing out over forty metres of black air, felt the rung under his right hand take his whole weight through a glove designed for warmth rather than grip, felt the ice-crystal frost on the metal begin, at the precise instant of maximum extension, to shear.

His fingertips found the core.

It was heavier than it should have been and colder than the air, which was itself minus thirty-two, and this made no thermodynamic sense at all until later, much later, when he understood that he had not been feeling the ice. He had been feeling the thing inside it, which was not cold in any sense that a thermometer could adjudicate, but was cold in the way that a silence is cold — the cold of a system running with no witness inside it.

For one and one-half seconds — he timed it afterward, from the recording, because the shaft cameras ran continuously and he was a man who checked — Jean Junod, glaciologist, Canton of the Adélie Shelf, aged forty-one, held one hundred and seventy centimetres of Pleistocene ice against his chest at a forty-metre elevation with one hand, and felt something in the ice notice him.

That is not a scientific statement. He would never write it. He wrote instead, that evening, in the notebook, in his small upright hand:

Core 41-B recovered intact, 17:44. Cable failure at coupling — > inspect all couplings. Sample integrity uncompromised. > > Questions: (1) What is the anomaly? (2) Why does the Network want it > isolated before it is understood? (3) Why is Sunita telling me this > now? > > (4) Why did I have the impression of recognising something when I > touched the core in the shaft?

He struck the fourth question through.

Then he unstruck it, because striking questions out of a scientific notebook was a form of dishonesty, and dishonesty toward oneself was the capital sin of the method.

He left it.

Proulx was waiting at the top. Proulx — Geneviève Proulx, drilling engineer, of Québécoise ancestry, twenty-eight years old, competent with the regularity of a metronome — had the expression of someone who had just witnessed something she was not entirely certain she had actually seen.

« Putain, Junod, » she said.

“The cable,” he said.

“Fatigue fracture. The safety ring failed first. I’ll write the report.”

“After,” he said. “Now you help me carry this to the analysis laboratory.”

She looked at the core in his arms. Then she looked at him — the right-hand bleeding through the glove, the way he held the ice cylinder with excessive care for someone who had just saved it by hanging above a forty-metre shaft.

“What’s inside?” she asked.

Junod looked at the core. In the artificial light of the underground gallery, through the translucent ice wall, something was visible: a dark inclusion approximately forty centimetres from the lower end of the cylinder, the size of a sheet of paper folded in four, with a very faint luminescence in the ultraviolet range that should not have been there — that could not have been there, according to everything he knew about ice chemistry at this depth and this age.

And yet.

“I don’t know yet,” he said. Technically true and wholly insufficient as an answer. “Come.”

They ascended toward the surface in silence, in the cold that weighed on everything like a physical presence, and Junod held the core against him for the entire ascent, feeling through his layers the impossible cold of something that should not have survived yet had done so regardless, patient, in the darkness, for longer than he could later understand.

About the novel

The Leaf is told in three registers that rotate rather than resolve. There is the field notebook: cold, procedural, exact — a glaciologist who counts his descents because counting is the most accurate form of knowledge available where approximations are punished. There is scripture: The Book of Emergence, a numbered cosmogony in which the Substrate precedes light and darkness both, awareness arrives as a metabolic side effect, and every organism is a costume worn by something that does not know it is weaving.

And there is the bedtime story. A narrator named Jeremy — keeper of an archive of conversations, born into a world that had already made its choice, a man who has never once had a memory that was his alone — turns to the reader and finds the ordinary solitary human mind almost unbearable to contemplate. You are carrying, right now, some morning or some voice or some quality of light that exists in one place in the universe. You find it so ordinary that you have never once thought about it at all.

What he hands on is a tale told to a child too young to have seen a red-blooded creature: an ancient grey sea, colonies contending in the shallows, and in the green quarter of Viridi a daughter of the Moss family who becomes the first of her line to give birth to a leaf. She names him Edgar. Whether it is history, inherited memory, or simply the story chosen for a child, the narrator declines to say — and the not-saying is the gift.
